On a cold and wet Wednesday evening our first team travelled back to Hertford Town for our re-arranged game with Enfield. The fixture had previously been due to take place on the 3rd January but had been called off five minutes before kick-off due to frozen pitch, much to the annoyance of both teams and both sets of supporters.
With Enfield in the relegation zone but having picked up points in recent weeks, this was a game Lions needed to win or at the very least not lose. With all other results going in our favour in the previous night's games, a win would certainly increase the gap between ourselves and those in the drop zone.
Lions had more of the early chances but it was a scrappy start, not helped by the conditions and possibly the clash of kit and we found the breakthrough in the 20th minute. Ben Barnett playing a ball to Jack Mattey which split the Enfield defence. Mattey picked out Daniel Creese on the edge of the box to fire home his fifth goal of the season.
There was very little else to report about in the first half. Enfield did have a great chance to equalise when an unmarked George Thompson blazed over the bar from eight yards out. 1-0 to Lions at half time.
Into the second half and Ben Barnett almost extended the lead firing wide from 25 yards, but neither side threatened. Then on 59 minutes Enfield were back on level terms. Lions failed to clear a cross into the box which landed straight at the feet of Thompson, who made no mistake this time volleying the ball into the back of the net from 12 yards.
The goal lifted the hosts and they continued to push forward, but the Lions defence restricted them to a couple of long range efforts. Lions regained the lead on 70 minutes - a headed clearance landed at the feet of Max Davis who picked out Benji Weinberger out on the left wing. His inch perfect cross found the head of substitute Zak Jackson giving the keeper no chance. 2-1 Lions.
The points were then sealed seven minutes later. A long goal kick from Nathan Bloohn was flicked on by Jackson. Jack Mattey getting in behind the Enfield defender and his clever footwork deceived the Enfield goalkeeper and he slotted home into an empty net. 3-1 Lions.
It wasn't a great performance by any means but it was a hugely important result for Lions and another three points closer to a second season in step four.
