Lions Fall to Clinical Biggleswade at Rowley Lane

It was another grey afternoon at Rowley Lane as third placed Biggleswade maintained their play-off push with a 4-1 win over Lions. Lions had picked their first away point at Biggleswade having drawn 2-2 earlier in the season and it was felt we could get something out of this game. However, the visitors dominated from the kick-off and justified their lofty league position but were really guilty of throwing away two or three gilt edge chances in the first half. They opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Alex Marsh converted from the penalty spot after Josh Shack was adjudged to have pulled back the Biggleswade No.3 in the box. As the half went on Lions did start to come into the game without really threatening the opposition. Then with half-time approaching Lions somehow found their way back into the game. A Benji Weinberger cross found the head of Ben Barnett who's flick landed at the feet of Max Kyte to poke home from just inside the six yard box. Lions were back on level terms. Both Max Davis and Jack Mattey had efforts from just outside of the box but it was 1-1 going into the break.

The game turned in the 52nd minute when a mis-timed tackle by Josh Shack once again against the Biggleswade No.3 left the referee with little choice but to brandish a second yellow card. Lions were down to ten men and within two minutes Biggleswade had regained their advantage. The opposition continued to dominate with tiring legs and the ten men of Lions being stretched, the visitors extended their lead in the 77th minute when a long range shot from Alex Marsh found the back of the net to make it 3-1.

To rub salt into the wound, centre-back Jake Rinsler, who'd had an excellent game, went off injured with ten minutes of the normal time remaining. Substitute Adam Burchell almost pulled one back on 86 minutes having dribbled past four players but his shot went high over the bar. Biggleswade wrapped things up in the 95th minute when a cross from the right hand side found Temi Akinbusoye un-marked on the edge of the six yard box for their fourth of the game.

A disappointing afternoon, much like the weather but with the majority of other results going in our favour, Lions remain 15 points clear of the drop zone.
