Lions rally after early blow in entertaining draw

It was back to Rowley Lane on Saturday to face a Beaconsfield side just three points ahead of Lions in the table. Having outplayed our opponents and come away with nothing when we visited Holloway Park at the end of September, this was a game we felt we could win.

However the game plan was quickly out of the window when an own goal from Yoav Sade in only the second minute gave the visitors the lead. It certainly knocked Lions out of their stride and found themselves two down on 19 minutes. The ball played down the Beaconsfield left, in behind the full-back and across the face of the goal. No one seemed able to deal with the ball and the number 11 tapped in from two yards out.

The reply was almost instantaneous, Zak Jackson playing a ball over the top into the box for Solly Jacobs to run on to. Jacobs getting the better of the defender only to be pulled back leaving the referee no choice but to award a penalty. Benji Weinberger calming putting the ball to the keeper's left and Lions were back in the game. From then on Lions played some excellent football and were duly rewarded in the 38th minute when once again Solly Jacobs turned provider, playing a neat one two with Max Davis before pick out Jack Mattey who hit a sweet left foot shot to make it 2-2.

The second half was equally entertaining and both sides had chances to nick the three points. Max Davis, Jack Mattey and Zan Appleson-Fidler all coming close with long range efforts. In the dying minutes of the game Daniel Creese, having been put through by Max Davis, had a chance to seal it with just the keeper to beat, but denied by a great save from the Beaconsfield keeper. From the ensuing corner Ben Bellman's acrobatic effort went over the bar and that was the last real chance of the game. And with that it finished all square and the points shared at Rowley Lane. The result leaves Lions in 15th place but 14 points clear of the relegation zone.
