Maccabi turn game around in dying stages

Maccabi left it late, but goals in the last minute of normal time and two minutes into injury time turned what looked like a defeat into a victory that was probably harsh on the visitors.
Tansley are an excellent side, and arrived at Rowley Lane with a 16 strong squad that boasted some real quality players. A good tough game ensued, but one that was played in a good spirit. The long grass and dry conditions did much to dictate the pace of the game, the ball holding up making the slick passing both sides prefer difficult.
Maccabi had the better of the opening exchanges, but as was to become a theme of the game the final ball just wasn't quite on the money. The closest they came was a cross by Rayner that Pearl at full stretch couldn't keep down. And then on the break they conceded, a long ball sent Tansley free, some neat interplay then in the box resulted in space for a smart finish.
The hosts responded and deservedly equalised, Stanton's shot was blocked back onto himself, the ball looping over the keeper and into net. From here Maccabi should have taken control, but just before half time they conceded a corner, the initial header won at the back post set up a simple close range finish to give Tansley the half time lead.
Maccabi pushed hard at the start of the half, one Sloma pass had Conway in at the far post but he couldn't keep his effort down while Corin had a couple of openings that didn't unduly trouble the keeper. But with the game entering its final quarter two key moments - first a wonder save from Abrahams in the Lions goal to tip a point blank header onto the bar to keep the deficit at 1, and then Tansley had a player sent off for a needless off the ball incident.
The hosts laid seige, although had to remain switched on defensively with Myeroff, Soutar and Corin all making vital interceptions to deny any break out attempts. Conway, Hakim and Sloma all had openings but with the clock running down it looked like the equaliser just wouldn't come. In a last effort Soutar was thrown forward, and as are the vagaries of the game, with his first touch he controlled a Hakim pass before absolutely rifling the ball home. Three minutes of injury time to play and both sides were probably content with the draw. But with Tansley firmly entrenched Maccabi came one last time, and when the ball fell to Hakim on the edge he swivelled and struck the ball goalwards, the ball finding the net for the winner via a slight deflection.
